During a time when the current trend is to change others’ views by force, we believe that unless we are soft bellied enough to be changed by the view of the other, no real transformative action can occur within ourselves and within our communities.

Soft Belly Theatre partners with local talent and small businesses in Cleveland to produce accessible art that challenges audiences to consider the view of the “other” and fosters fellowship in the process. It is our mission to equitably employ Cleveland artists and institutions by reaching beyond what might be considered a “typical” theatre-going experience. By utilizing found spaces, we aim to directly reflect the people of Cleveland with thought-provoking art that can echo and also challenge their perception of what it means to be alive in our particular environment.

To us, the rehearsal room is a representation of the world we wish to see outside of it. Which is why trust, curiosity, and empathy are the leading principles in everything we do: the way we make work is just as important as the work itself. We believe championing these fundamentals allows our influence to spread far beyond the theatre we produce and has the power to positively impact the Cleveland communities we serve.
